DX Assist 3.1.2

DX Assist is a dialogue-editing assistant for Pro Tools. It takes the tedious, repetitive part of dialogue editing — cleaning up production tracks, choosing between overlapping microphones, and removing everything that isn't the line — and does it for you, so you can spend your time on the creative calls.

It works directly with Pro Tools .ptx session files, so it fits your assembly workflow or any other pipeline you prefer. The ideal flow: after assembly (or after importing an AAF), export a session that contains only the dialogue tracks, then open that file in DX Assist. You preview the whole session on a built-in timeline, process it, and save a new session — your original is never touched.

Three workflows:

1. Export a new session — the fastest route.
Open your .ptx in DX Assist, process the whole timeline or just selected clips, then Save As a new .ptx. Open that file back in Pro Tools and you're done. It's the quickest, most self-contained path — nothing is written to a live session.

2. Apply the changes straight back to Pro Tools.
Open your .ptx in DX Assist and compute your clips or the whole timeline as usual — but instead of exporting, push the edits directly onto the Pro Tools timeline, with no file export in between. This flow also includes PFX extraction, pulling production effects onto their own tracks.

3. DX Assistant — work entirely inside Pro Tools.
No need to open a session in DX Assist at all. Shrink DX Assist to a compact toolbar, select the clips on your Pro Tools timeline, and run the processing right there with a single shortcut — DX Assist reads your selection and applies the result back in place.

Processing

You decide what gets processed: select individual tracks or clips, or run the whole timeline.

  • Horizontal processing — detects speech (Silero VAD) and removes everything between the lines: silence, room tone, noise, and off-mic bleed. Turn it on or off independently.
  • Vertical processing — when several microphones cover the same moment (lavs), DX Assist compares them and keeps the best one, muting the rest. Improved engine with a more flexible tolerance bar (Strict / Balanced / Permissive) so you control how aggressively it decides.
  • CUT or MUTE — remove unwanted regions outright (CUT), or silence them in place while keeping the clips on the timeline (MUTE).
  • Keep non-speech sounds — preserve laughter, breaths, gasps, and other human reactions that a plain voice detector would otherwise strip.
  • Presets — one-click starting points such as Casual dialog scene, Horizontal only, and Boom selection (Vertical-only, to pick the best mic with no cutting).
  • Multi-channel and multi-playlist tracks are fully supported.

Assistants

  • DX Assistant — shrinks DX Assist to a compact toolbar. Select any range of regions directly in Pro Tools, then process them through DX Assist with a single keyboard shortcut — no exporting, no switching windows.
  • ADR Assistant — reads the audio you've flagged for ADR, transcribes it, and places it on the timeline automatically, saving the time you'd spend transcribing and arranging by hand. Review lines as cue cards, sync per cue, keep a character roster, and export a cue sheet to PDF, Word, or Excel.
  • ALT Assistant - the newest module. It locates alternate takes across your dailies so you can audition and swap lines without hunting through folders manually.
  • ASSEMBLY - for assembing production audio to pro tools timeline guide

Files & sessions

  • .ptx support — open, preview, process, and save Pro Tools sessions.
  • AAF support — load, preview, process, and save out a new AAF file.
  • Save As (⌘S) — non-destructive by design; your source session stays intact.
  • Close & save — process clips in DX Assist, close the session, and reopen later: your work stays processed.

Timeline & interface

  • Clean, modern timeline with a calm, readable layout.
  • Pro Tools-style keyboard shortcuts — the keys you already know.
  • Timecode display with the ability to type a value and jump straight to it.
  • Full preview and playback of the session before you commit.
